DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check three things from the firebox: whether the handle linkage is detached (look up with a flashlight), whether the plate moves freely by hand when the handle is disconnected, and whether rust debris has accumulated on the smoke shelf. What you cannot safely do is remove or replace the damper assembly. The plate and frame are heavy castings positioned above your head in a confined space; dropping one can crack firebrick or damage the flue liner.
