If the plate moves freely by hand but the chain does nothing, you’ve got a disconnected linkage. That’s a $15 part and twenty minutes if you’re comfortable on your knees at the hearth.

Everything else belongs to a technician. The plate sits at the top of the firebox throat, typically 18-24 inches up, in a space that requires a flashlight and a mirror to see properly. More importantly, a misaligned replacement plate can block the flue partially, causing smoke spillage or carbon monoxide release into the living space.
