Gelco Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Crown Repair: The Elmhurst Owner’s Guide

Gelco crown repair in Elmhurst typically runs $340-$680 installed, depending on whether we’re resurfacing a Gelco crown with minor cracking or replacing a unit that’s spalled through to the flue edge. We stock Gelco-compatible crown repair compounds and forms on every truck, and most Elmhurst jobs are completed in a single visit once the crown has been camera-inspected and the scope written. Most owners discover the problem during a routine sweep, or when they notice sand-colored debris in the firebox after rain, or when a neighbor points out the concrete crown looks “sugary” from the street.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco manufactured two distinct crown product lines relevant to Elmhurst homes: their poured concrete crown forms (common on 1980s-2000s builds in the York Woods and Cottage Hill areas) and their stainless steel crown/cap hybrid assemblies sold through specialty distributors in the 2010s. The concrete forms are stamped “GELCO” on the underside edge; the hybrids carry a model sticker near the spark arrestor, usually reading GC-8, GC-10, or GC-12 for the flue diameter they cover.

The compatibility gotcha: Gelco GC-10 crowns were shipped with two different base flange widths, 13-inch and 15-inch, depending on whether they were sold through their Midwest or Northeast distribution channel. Elmhurst homes almost always have the 13-inch flange, but we’ve pulled a 15-inch off a Park Avenue bungalow that the previous owner sourced online. We measure before we quote. That’s Clause 1 of the Haven Standard: written price, written scope, before any work starts.

For poured crowns, we use HeatShield CrownSeal or a custom-poured replacement using Gelco-compatible forms. For the hybrid assemblies, we stock OEM-grade stainless from Olympia Chimney and Copperfield that matches Gelco’s 304-spec and gauge. We are an independent service provider with no affiliation to Gelco.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Sandy debris in the firebox after rain. The crown’s top surface has spalled, meaning the concrete matrix has broken down and washed into the flue. In Elmhurst, this accelerates after freeze-thaw cycles, and we see it most on south-facing crowns that take full sun expansion stress followed by overnight contraction.
  • Hairline cracks radiating from the flue tile edge. These start as shrinkage cracks in the original pour, then widen as water enters and freezes. Once a crack reaches 1/8 inch, water is reaching the rebar or mesh below, and rust expansion will blow the crown apart within two to three burning seasons.
  • Metal crown edge lifting or separating from the brick course. On Gelco hybrid assemblies, the base flange can work loose if the original installer used standard mortar instead of the high-bond sealant Gelco specified. We’ve reseated four of these on Elm Street alone.
  • Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney breast. By the time interior damage shows, the crown has been leaking long enough to saturate the chimney stack. The camera doesn’t editorialize. Neither do I. We run the scan, show you the footage, and write the price.
  • Vegetation or moss growing on the crown surface. This indicates chronic moisture retention in a crown that should shed water completely. The root structure further fractures the concrete, and in Elmhurst’s clay-heavy soil zones, that moisture wicks down to the foundation.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Gelco crown resurfacing (minor cracks, intact structure) $340-$480 Grind, clean, apply HeatShield CrownSeal or equivalent, 5-year material warranty
Gelco crown partial rebuild (spalling, rebar intact) $480-$580 Form and pour new concrete crown, bond to existing flue tile, 10-year warranty
Gelco hybrid assembly replacement $520-$680 Remove, measure, install OEM-compatible stainless assembly, seal and counterflash, 10-year warranty

What drives the range: access height (single-story Elmhurst bungalows vs. two-story Colonials near Wilder Park), whether the flue tile needs resetting, and whether we find secondary water damage once the old crown is off. Every estimate is written before work starts. Every job gets a documented photo record under Haven Standard Clause 4. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to all crown work.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check from the ground: binoculars for visible cracking, a flashlight look at the firebox for debris after rain, and whether your Gelco model sticker is legible for our parts lookup. What goes wrong with DIY crown work: working at roof height on a chimney stack with no tie-off point, mixing crown concrete to the wrong slump (too wet and it shrinks-cracks; too dry and it won’t bond), and failing to seal the flue tile interface, which guarantees water intrusion behind your repair. Crown sealants also require application within a specific temperature window, and Elmhurst’s spring weather often falls outside it. If you’re comfortable on a ladder and want to verify the model number, that’s useful information. If you’re thinking about mixing concrete on your roof, call (708) 498-3199 and we’ll write you a price.
